This is a big topic for me. As a nutritionist, health is priority. Whatever nourishes your body will be what I advise. Food is fuel ⛽
Counting calories is constantly thrown all over my news feed. Flexible dieting and IIFYM. The list goes on.... 😑😑😑
1. So firstly, yes a calorie is a calorie. But the problem with some of these posts is, people see calorie for calorie comparisons, substitute foods based on these calorie comparisons but don't understand anything about their own caloric intake. I've seen doughnuts compared to wholefood bars, Alcohol compared to smoothies etc. People see 'fitness people' eating these foods so eat them themselves, uneducated to the fact that they may be in a calorie surplus while the said educator was probably eating this in a calorie deficit. Understand it is overall calories that count and each individual is different. Calorie intake is based on weight, height, age, gender, activity level, etc.

2. While a calorie is a calorie. Micros count!!!!!! Eating a Mc Donald's every morning may 'Fit your macros' but my god are you missing out on the fibre, magnesium, Iron, Zinc, and B Group Vitamins that a big bowl of oats provide 🥣🥣🥣
.
.
3. Gastrointestinal discomfort. I have a sensitive stomach so this MAY be just me but my God do I feel like crap after a takeaway/chocolate binge. Its fine every once in awhile but consistently is just hard 😱 Even if the calories were the same, I'd take my fish and greens any day🙋♀️
.
.
4. From my experience and experience with other athletes, wholefoods improve performance. If you asked me to go play a game tomorrow under 2 different conditions 1. 2000 Cals of wholefoods, lots of complex carbs, healthy fats, protein and water versus 2. 2000 Cals of Chips, pizza and diet coke. I can tell you now which one I'd feel better on 🤪🤪🤪
.
.
So yes, a calorie is a calorie and calorie wise there is no difference between water and diet coke. And with regards Aspartame do your research. Again, it all comes back to goals. I certainly wouldn't be able to fuel my body with crap and perform well, another may be able but at least be educated next time 🤟
